Crowds gathered along Main Street in Geneseo today to watch a work crew with a crane winch a 50-ton granite basin into place for the rebuilt village fountain.
They’re rebuilding the historic bear fountain that was destroyed last year when it was hit by a milk truck…then a pickup truck a couple of months later. The basin was too badly damaged to be restored, but the bronze bear statue that stood on top of the fountain was rescued and stored away safely for today.
The fountain has stood at the village center since 1888. The remains of the original red granite basin are being loaded on a truck and taken to Vermont to become part of a new statue.
