Gates Police are warning about telephone scammers, saying two town residents were taken for thousands of dollars.
In one case, a man was told his computer needed work and he granted the caller remote access to his computer. The scammer hacked into his bank accounts and stole about $2,000.
The other incident was a classic “lottery” scam in which a caller convinced a 79-year-old they had won more than $7 million, but needed to pay “taxes and fees” upfront. That victim was scammed for $14,000.
Police say you should never send money to someone who calls you and never give out identity information over the phone.
