Gates Police Chief James VanBrederode is retiring at the end of the week, and there’s talk he may be a candidate for State Senate against Democratic incumbent Jeremy Cooney.

VanBrederode has had a 37-year career in law enforcement, mostly with the Gates Police after starting with the Rochester Police Department. He’s been chief in Gates since 2013, and has been president of the Monroe County Chief’s Association the past four years.

Lt. Robert Long, a 17-year-veteran, will be acting chief and the town expects to appoint him chief at a board meeting on February 7.
