The New York State average price for a gallon of gasoline is now $2.50, down two cents from last week. But the AAA says the decline won’t last.

Rochester’s average dropped by two cents to $2.44 a gallon over the last week, Buffalo down a penny to $2.46 and Syracuse is down three cents at $2.37 a gallon.

The auto club says prices are going down because drivers have shifted into “park.” Post holidays, they’re not driving as much. Demand is down by nearly eight percent. At the same time, gasoline and oil production has been ramping up. The result is falling prices.

The supply glut is temporary and will disappear in April and May as refiners switch to the summer gas blend.
