New York and Monroe County gasoline tax cuts take effect today, June 1. The state has cut the gas tax in half, saving drivers about 16 cents a gallon, and Monroe County is capping its tax, saving drivers about 28 cents per gallon.
This comes as the AAA says the average price of gas hit $4.93 a gallon across the country on Tuesday.
State and county officials have asked retailers to pass the tax cuts on to the drivers, but there’s no mechanism to make sure they do.
