Fire destroyed a garage in Perinton Monday afternoon, and heavily damaged the attached house. The fire got so hot it also melted the siding on the house next door.
The fire broke out about 3:35 p.m. on Old Post Road. The apparent cause was an overheated lawn tractor that caught fire after the homeowner mowed his lawn and put the tractor back in his garage. Several gas cans in the garage exploded when the flames hit them. Both people in the house got out safely.
Firefighters say the garage is a complete loss, but the house had mainly smoke and water damage and won’t have to be torn down. The neighboring house had only external damage.
