The phone book is a step closer to being a thing of the past. The State Public Service Commission has granted a request from Frontier Communications to stop printing and delivering phone books to all of its customers…unless they ask for one.
The PSC says it’s still requiring Frontier to supply free phone listings online and have a supply of directories printed for people who want one. They’ll still have the residential, business and government land lines like they’ve always had…but not cellular and voice over internet numbers. The PSC had already approved a similar order for Verizon, which has abandoned the phone book as well.
Frontier says getting rid of phone books will save millions over the years and prevent 11 million metric tons of paper from going in the trash every year.
