Today’s C&C Worldwide SportsROC Report includes stories on the Rochester Red Wings loss to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and a defenseman re-signs with the Rochester Knighthawks.

Red Wings fall, 7-5, to Scranton

The Rochester Red Wings had the tying runs in scoring position in the top of the ninthh inning, but could not bring them home as they fell 7-5 to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday night in Pennsylvania.

Trailing 3-0 in the fourth, the Red Wings rallied for 5 runs to take the lead. Daniel Palka started it off with a single to left. Adam Brett Walker drew a walk, then James Beresford laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Logan Schafer singled home Palka. Wilfredo Tovar was safe on an error as Walker crossed the plate with the second run.

John Ryan Murphy lofted a sacrifice fly to center as Schafer scored the tying run. Tommy Field ripped a triple to put the Wings ahead, and he scampered home with the fifth run on Darin Mastroianni’s hit up the middle.

However, the Yankees got one run back in the home half, and regained the lead on a 2-run homer by Tyler Austin off Jose Berrios (8-4) in the sixth inning. They added an insurance run in the eighth.

Field, Walker, and Beresford each had 3 hits for the Wings.

Rochester (51-39) dropped into third place in the International League North Division, 4.5 games behind leader Scranton/WB (55-34), and a half game behind Lehigh Valley (51-38).

Campbell re-signs with Knighthawks

The Rochester Knighthawks announced today that they have re-signed Scott Campbell to a 3-year deal. The veteran defenseman will enter his seventh season with the Knighthawks in 2017.

“It was a no-brainer. I didn’t look anywhere else,” said Campbell. “I didn’t even contemplate going anywhere else. I like what we have going on with the Knighthawks. I like the ownership and the guys on the team. It was ‘show me where to sign’ and I was there.”

Last season, “Soupy” played in 17 games and notched 4 goals and 8 assists for 12 points, which was the third highest point total of his career. He also finished with a career-high 94 loose balls. He was rewarded for his efforts, receiving the Knighthawks’ Best Defenseman honor for the first time in his career.

Campbell entered the 2016 campaign after helping Team Canada win its fourth straight FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championship. It was his first gold medal after representing Scotland at the 2007 event. Playing for Canada on the international stage allowed him to hone his skills prior to the start of the NLL season.

Campbell admitted that Rochester has been his favorite stop. It’s the family atmosphere created by Rochester Owner and General Manager Curt Styres that has endeared him to the Knighthawks.

“He is always thinking about our family, knowing that it’s part of his extended family,” said Campbell. “He is always making sure our families are happy, healthy and okay with the time we’ve got to take away from them to play lacrosse. He thinks of that first and it trickles down to the organization.

“This group of guys has been together for a long period of time as well,” he added. “We are growing together as a family. A lot of us have children around the same age. It’s nice to have that atmosphere outside of just the game.”
