The Penfield senior became the first wrestler ever to capture 6 SuperSectional titles.
In Section 5 high school wrestling, Penfield senior Frankie Gissendanner established a record with his sixth SuperSectional title. He captured the 145-pound crown with a fall over Brockport’s Troy Ferris in 1:28 in the Division 1 final.
Penfield coach John Leone, who received the Terry Justice Memorial Service Award, was quoted as saying, “You have to understand the traditiion of Section 5 wrestling is super-rich. There’s been some phenoms, like Gregor Gillespie (Webster Schroeder), Yianni Diakomihalis (Hilton), even go back to the 1970s with Frank DeAngelis (Spencerport).
“There’s been some very, very special athletes who have come through here, so for Frank to win a sixth title, where no one else was able to do so, is pretty special.”
Gissendanner (45-1) will be going after his fourth consecutive New York State championship Feb. 24-25 at the Times Union Center in Albany.
