A lawsuit filed this week under New York’s Child Victims Act accused a former Brighton teacher and gymnastics coach with sexually abusing two young women on what court papers call “hundreds of occasions” over several years.

The CVA lawsuit says Duncan Ververs began abusing the two girls when they were in the 7th and 9th grades in 1971, and the abuse continued until the 1975-1976 school year. Ververs was a teacher at Council Rock Elementary School and a BrightonTown Recreation Departmnt gymnastics coach. He retired in 2001.

The suit charges that Ververs sexually abused the girls at the school, as well as in hotel rooms when they traveled for gymnastics events.

The Brighton Central School District said in a statement that it has been informed of the suit but has not received formal notice and cannot comment. A similar statement was released by the Town of Brighton.
