In the end, it was an umbrella and an envelope that lowered the boom on the alleged Xerox Credit Union robber.
According to the criminal complaint filed in federal court, the FBI got a sample of suspect Richard Leon Wilbern’s DNA when he came to their offices to give a statement about being the victim of an alleged scam, and licked an envelope. It matched the DNA on an umbrella left behind by the suspect. That evidence was received back from the FBI labs about the beginning of September.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Adam Cohen says Wilbern actually called them about the scam while they were already developing information about him. He calls it an incredible coincidence. But Cohen says far more than a lucky chance was involved. He says thousands of hours were put in by hundreds of people running down clues and tips and checking facts to bring about the arrest.
