Members of the Rochester and Buffalo Congressional delegations are meeting with the Flight 3407 families in Washington today, demanding that Congress not roll back airline safety upgrades made since the 3407 crash.

Continental Connections flight 3407 crashed on a snowy night in Clarence Center, while attempting to land in Buffalo. A total of 50 people were killed, including a homeowner whose house was demolished by a direct hit from the falling turboprop airliner.

The investigation into the crash led to orders imposing crew rest requirements and shining a light on the fact that safety standards on regional airlines that fly increasing numbers of airline flights didn’t have the same training and safety standards as the major carriers. Congresswoman Louise Slaughter says the concern of family and friends of those 51 victims is that Congress not roll back those regulations as they reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration.

In the case of Flight 3407, the investigation concluded an over-tired and inexperienced crew made the wrong control inputs when the plane began to stall on its approach to Buffalo, causing it to roll out of control and crash.
