Some Steuben County residents were evacuated from their homes overnight due to flash flooding, and were advised early Thursday not to return to their homes until public safety, code enforcement and utility crews could inspect the damage after daybreak.
Particularly hard-hit was the Town of Addision, Where Tuscarora Creek and the Canisteo River rose and forced an evacuation. Steuben County officials said those residents will be notified when it’s safe to return.
Steuben County declared a State of Emergency for the Towns of West Union, Woodhull, Troupsburg, Tuscarora, Greenwood, Canisteo, Hornellsville, Jasper, and Addison. It remains in effect until further notice, Many roads are closed or damaged and covered with debris. Road crews are working through the day to inspect and restore safe passage. Residents have been told to stay off the road until advised so the work can be done quickly.
The sheriffs of Steuben and Yates Counties are warning boaters that substantial amounts of debris including parts of docks and even boats have been swept into Keuka Lake. They’re warning boaters to go slow and keep a sharp lookout. The same conditions have been noted on Canandaigua and Seneca Lakes.
