No. 4 WNY upsets No. 1 Portland, 4-3, in overtime on 2 goals by Lynn Williams.
Golden Boot winner Lynn Williams scored twice in overtime to propel No. 4 Western New York Flash over No. 1 Portalnd Thorns, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon in Portland.
Goals by Samantha Mewis and Makenzy Doniak had the Flash leading 2-1 in the second half before the Thorns netted the equalizer to tsend the match intotwo 15-minute overtime periods.
Williams scored on a left-footed shot just past the outstretched hands of the Portland goalie to put the Flash in front, 3-2.
Mewis stole the ball, brought it up field and fed Williams a perfect pass as her soft shot was placed perfectly for a 4-2 lead.
The Thorns, however, refused to give up and scored to pull within one goal, but the Flash defense was solid to preserve the victory.
WNY will face the Washington Spirit for the NWSL Championship on Oct. 9, in Houston.
