The Rochester fire department handled two blazes in quick succession on Sunday, one in a scrap yard and the other on the roof of a building on Lyell Avenue near Saratoga Avenue.

The first fire broke out late morning in a pile of scrap metal at a yard on Steele Street. Staff assisted by using their heavy equipment more break up the scrap pile so firefighters could get more water on the fire. The cause remains under investigation.

The second fire broke out early in the afternoon at a business on Lyell Avenue which had flames coming from the roof. The cause was carelessly discarded smoking materials. The fire was quickly extinguished and fans were needed to vent smoke from the building.

Nobody was injured in either fire.
