Two fire engines and crews were needed to extinguish a fire that broke out about 4:30 Thursday morning in the rear of a house on Ames Street. The first truck had trouble getting water from a hydrant on scene, with the second truck providing a connection to another hydrant.

A search found nobody inside, with fire on the first and second floors. The building was heavily damaged, but nobody was hurt. Cause of the fire is under investigation.
