Rochester firefighters say working smoke detectors alerted the residents of a house at 22 Hickory Street when fire broke out shortly before 3:00 this morning.
A spokesman says fire crews arrived to find smoke pouring from the first floor of a double house. The fire was in the kitchen of the first floor apartment. It was engulfed in flames when they arrived.
Both families living in the house had to get out, and were being helped by the Red Cross.
