Fire broke out at a home on Union Street in Parma about 6:00 Monday morning. According to the Spencerport fire chief, it apparently started in a recycling box of paper outside the house.
A passing driver saw smoke, grabbed a fire extinguisher and started dousing the flames. Firefighters had trouble with the bitter cold temperatures and had to shut down Union Street for about an hour.
One person got out of the house safely, and everyone is OK.
