Fire struck a two-story brick apartment building on Rowley Street early Thursday morning, with crews arriving to find fire coming from the basement and heavy smoke throughout the building.

The first company on scene requested a second company to help with search and rescue and the attack on the fire. They were able to contain the fire to the room where it began, with some damage to the apartment above. Everyone got out safely, with firefighters rescuing a dog that was safely returned to its owner.

The 11-unit building had significant smoke damage and was deemed uninhabitable. The utilities were shut off by RG&E. The Red Cross is assisting the residents with alternate housing.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury and went to the hospital for evaluation. A fire investigation unit is looking into the cause.
