As a split develops in the United Methodist Church over same-sex marriage, the Fairport UMC says it will welcome same-sex couples to marry.
The church says 97 percent of its membership has voted to approve that resolution, which challenges the doctrine of the United Methodist denomination. Pastor Richelle Goff said: “Our congregation is very ready for this change, and we felt that our current denominational rules were harmful, discriminatory and unjust, and therefore did not want to wait for General Conference, now scheduled for 2022, to change the rules.”
Fairport UMC is part of what’s know in the Methodist Church as the “Reconciling Ministries Network.” It seeks gender inclusion for all sexual orientation and gender identities.
