Erie Canal SignThe Erie Canal has reopened from Brockport to Middleport after completion of temporary repairs for a leaking culvert in Orleans County.

The New York State Canal Corporation says the CP Ward Company of Brockport expedited the repairs and crews were able to begin refilling the canal over the weekend. They’ll come back and make permanent repairs after the canal closes and drains for the winter.

The State Transportation Department says they pushed the project not only because it’s the height of boating season, but also because the canal provides irrigation water to 25 farms and two golf courses along its route. That was especially needed in the current dry spell.
