New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says an Energy Supply company named Energy Plus will pay an $800,000 penalty for fleecing its customers by luring them with promises of lower rates, then not delivering.
The money will go for refunds to Energy Plus customers as part of a settlement that puts restrictions on the company’s marketing program.
Energy Service Companies or “ESCOs” are alternatives to buying electricity and gas directly from a utility provider like RG&E. They can provide savings, but in the case of Energy Plus, they actually ended up costing more. They also imposed delays on customers wanting to close their accounts and switch to another service.
