Irondequoit officials say the town’s Public Works Department has found the Emerald Ash Borer beetle in multiple locations in the town.
Supervisor Dave Seeley says the town will immediately begin to cut down infected trees that are on public rights-of-way, replacing them with new trees of other species. Irondequoit is encouraging landowners with ash trees on their property to get in touch with Cornell Cooperative Extension or go on the Department of Environmental Conservation website to finding an arborist who can help save their trees…or advise if they have to go.
The Ash Borer is an invasive species that infests ash trees. The larvae tunnel beneath the bark and kill the tree within two-to-four years.
