A Penfield man was arrested for stealing a Jeep in the City of Rochester, before he crashed it at an intersection in Penfield early Tuesday morning.

Monroe County Deputies say 38-year-old David Steyer of Penfield was charged with criminal possession of stolen property and unauthorized use of a vehicle after the crash.

They say Steyer was on Atlantic Avenue just east of Jackson Road when he went off the road, hit a mailbox and then several trees in a wooded area. The Jeep Liberty was wrecked, but Steyer was able to get out and flag down a passing driver for help. He was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being charged.

Deputies say they don’t know why Steyer left the road but say drugs or alcohol were not involved.
