The New York State Assembly Judiciary Committee begins hearings Monday morning on whether it will recommend articles of impeachment against Governor Andrew Cuomo, following last week’s report from the Attorney General’s investigation that he sexually harassed 11 women.
Meanwhile, there were dramatic developments in the situation over the weekend, culminating in the resignation of one of Governor Cuomo’s top staffers. Melissa DeRosa, the governor’s secretary, sumitted her resignation Sunday night. She released a statement that made no mention of Cuomo, speaking only of how grateful she was to have worked with talented and committed colleagues on behalf of the state.
Earlier, on Saturday, Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple held a news conference regarding the criminal complaint brought by a former aide to the governor and filed with the Albany County District Attorney. Apple said he will neither rush nor delay the investigation into whether the governor illegally groped the woman, identified in the Attorney General’s report as “Executive Assistant #1.” She alleges the governor both fondled her rear and groped her breast while they took a selfie at the Executive Mansion.
Apple couldn’t say much more due to the ongoing investigation, but Attorney General Letitia James released a statement saying her office will cooperate fully with Sheriff Apple an turn over all evidence it has collected related to the woman’s complaint.
