BUFFALO, N.Y. — Derek Dorsett had two goals and an assist to help lead the Vancouver Canucks to a 4-2 win against the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center on Friday.
The forward’s shorthanded goal made it 2-2 at 5:52 of the second period. Dorsett put a rebound of a shot by Brandon Sutter past Chad Johnson for his third goal. It was the sixth shorthanded goal allowed by the Sabres this season.
Dorsett added an empty-net goal at 19:38 of the third period that made it 4-2. He had an assist on Markus Granlund’s first-period goal that tied it 1-1 at 11:56.
The Canucks (3-3-1) are 2-1-0 on their five-game road trip. The Sabres (1-5-2) have lost two straight games.
Daniel Sedin made it 3-2 at 8:10 of the second period after he put a rebound of his own shot past goalie Chad Johnson after a pass from Henrik Sedin.
Sabres coach Phil Housley challenged the goal, saying forward Jake Virtanen was offside, but after video review it was ruled Virtanen had possession and control of the puck as he entered the attacking zone prior to the goal.
Justin Bailey gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead at 1:00 of the first period. Bailey received a pass from Ryan O’Reilly and slipped the puck past goalie Jacob Markstrom with a backhand shot for his second goal.
After Granlund tied it, Jack Eichel gave the Sabres a 2-1 lead at 17:20 of the first. Eichel received a pass from Rasmus Ristolainen and skated into the Canucks zone where he stick-handled past defenseman Ben Hutton and beat Markstrom for his third goal.
Markstrom made 20 saves; Johnson made 37
The Sabres on Friday announced the team recalled defenseman Taylor Fedun from the Rochester Americans.
Fedun (28, 6-foot-1, 201 lbs.) has one assist in three games with the Americans this season after signing a two-year contract extension with the Sabres in June. He appeared in 27 NHL games during the 2016-17 season, recording a career-high seven points (0+7). He also led Sabres defensemen in assists per 60 (1.16) and his 5-on-5 shot attempts percentage (53.7%) ranked 23rd among all NHL defensemen with more than five games played in 2016-17.
Through parts of four NHL seasons, Fedun has totaled 14 points (2+12) and a plus-3 rating. In 295 regular-season games throughout his six AHL seasons, he has recorded 156 points (37+119) and a plus-20 rating, adding eight points (4+4) in 28 playoff games.
In a corresponding move, the Sabres have placed forward Jacob Josefson on injured reserve.
