A Monroe County sheriff’s deputy is on administrative duty while the department and the New York State Attorney General’s Office each run investigations on the deputy’s possible involvement in a fatal car crash in East Rochester last weekend.

The sheriff’s office says a community member called Sheriff Baxter’s office on Monday after the Saturday morning crash. The caller was concerned about seeing a deputy driving away from the area of the crash and questioned whether the deputy had been involved.

The department says preliminary investigation showed a deputy was, indeed, in the area. Investigators obtained video showing a car traveling at high speed, and about 10 seconds later, a patrol cruiser with its emergency lights on following in the same direction. At this point, the Attorney General’s Office was notified. Each agency is now conducting its own investigation.

The deputy’s name is not being released, and it’s not certain the deputy was pursuing the speeding car that later crashed, killing the 17-year-old driver.
