The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers forecast for Lake Ontario confirms the lake has peaked as of about Friday, and is expected to hold at about the current level for the next 30 days. Lake Erie has already turned around and is expected to fall by about an inch over the coming month.

The blue line on the graph shows how much higher the lake is above the original forecasts before the unusually wet spring (the blue dots). The red line is the average.

Lake Ontario peaked at about 31 inches above last year’s level.

That’s good news for lakeshore home and property owners, but the lake will remain dangerously high for weeks, and above average for months. That means a north wind can still bring waves driving ashore and flooding homes as it did on Saturday. Docks and other lakeside facilities including at the Coast Guard Station in Summerville are underwater. The Coast Guard station parking lot is underwater and getting to the building involves wading.

Friday’s level was just under 248 feet, 11 inches. It dropped a bit on Saturday and Sunday and as of Monday morning stands at a little less than 248 feet, 10-and-a-half inches. The photo shows an Army Corps buoy, used to get the lake condition and depth readings.

The Lake Ontario-St Lawrence River Control Board, which is part of the International Joint Commission, continues to release more water down the St. Lawrence River as fast as it can without flooding Montreal.
