Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley will send the case of two Rochester police officers accused of police brutality to a grand jury.

The Reverend Lewis Stewart of United Christian Leadership Ministries says he met with DA Doorley on Tuesday and was given that assurance. Stewart calls it “a milestone” in mending police-community relations in Rochester.

Police officers Michael Sippel and Spender McAvoy were suspended by the department after they were accused of assaulting a Rochester man, despite the fact that he showed them identification proving he wasn’t the wanted man they were looking for.

Rochester Police Chief Michael Ciminelli called the arrest “a failure,” and Mayor Lovely Warren asked for criminal charges against the two officers after viewing body camera footage of the incident.
