Governor Cuomo says he’ll propose in his State of the State message the outlawing of so-called “revenge porn.” Under Cuomo’s proposal, anyone who posts naked images of an ex-partner to shame them in social media would be forced to register as a sex offender.
Posting of privately-shared intimate photos or using threats and blackmail to force someone into a compromising position is also known as “sextortion.” Cuomo says either offense should be punishable by anywhere from a year in jail to 15 years in prison for the most serious cases.
The governor says these are crimes that disproportionately target young women and girls and causes harm that can follow them for their entire lives.
