Governor Andrew Cuomo says he’s ready to sign a package of police reform bills that began working their way through the State Senate and Assembly on Monday.
Among them, the bills make it legal in New York for citizens to video police officers at work. They ban choke holds for police, make it illegal to falsely report an incident because of a person’s race and require the disclosure of a police officer’s disciplinary records in cases involving accusations of police misconduct.
The bills were debated in both houses Monday and are still working their way through the legislative process. They follow the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the public outcry that resulted.
