Governor Andrew Cuomo says the first proposal in his 2018 State of the State message will be a state law taking away firearms from those convicted of domestic violence-related crimes.
Cuomo says gun violence and domestic violence are inextricably linked. He says any conviction on a misdemeanor or felony related to domestic violence should require the guilty parties to lose their pistol permits and also surrender any long guns they own. He wants judges who issue an order of protection to also require surrender of all firearms owned by the person the order is issued against.
Cuomo says that will help prevent additional tragedies.
