Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed the COVID-19 Emergency Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Act of 2020, temporarily barring residential evictions and foreclosure proceedings caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic.
The law puts a moratorium on residential evictions until May 1st for those who face eviction because they’ve lost their income because of COVID. Tenants must submit a hardship declaration: a document explaining the cause of their hardship, to prevent eviction. Landlords may still evict tenants that are creating safety or health hazards, or those who don’t submit the declaration.
