A law signed Tuesday by Governor Andrew Cuomo requires all passengers in a vehicle to wear seatbelts, no matter whether they’re riding in front or in the back seats.
New York’s original seatbelt law exempted people over 16 from having to wear belts in the back seats. The new law deletes that language and mandates seatbelts for all.
AAA New York says the law will save lives and prevent injuries. Over the past 10 years, AAA says nearly 300 people were killed and over 25,000 injured riding unrestrained in the back of a car.
