Governor Cuomo says the state is taking several actions to fight against hate crimes and civil rights violations across New York, starting with creation of a new State Police hate crimes unit.
The new State Police unit will both investigate and assist other agencies to investigate potential hate crimes.
Speaking at a church in New York City the governor said he’s also asking the legislature to expand New York’s human rights law to protect all students and he’s establishing a new emergency legal defense fund for immigrants.
Cuomo says this is necessary because of the post-election climate and the uptick in report of discrimination, bias-motivated threats and harassment around New York. Cuomo says New Yorkers are better than that.
