Over the weekend, Governor Andrew Cuomo told Black Lives Matter protesters to get on board with the police reform plan he’s created for all of New York State.
In an executive order, Cuomo directed all 500-plus police agencies in the state to create individual police reform plans, worked out together with representatives of the communities they serve, and then approved by their local government. Cuomo said this must be done by April 1st, 2021 or the departments risk losing state funding.
In his daily briefings on Saturday and Sunday, Cuomo said everyone concerned with police reform should get involved in this process and do the work necessary to decide what type of police their municipality should have, how it should be organized and how it should be funded. Cuomo said “the clock is ticking.”
