Finger Lakes tourism and agricultural interests opposed to a planned trash-to-energy plant in Romulus took their case to Albany today. They’re urging state lawmakers and governor Cuomo to allow home rule instead of the state’s expedited power plant siting process, known as Article 10.
Meanwhile, Governor Cuomo has come out against the incinerator. Cuomo says the Circular enerG project doesn’t fit his goals for protecting public health and the environment, and he’s confident the Article 10 siting board will reject it. He says he’s willing to look at any other solution the legislature may come up with.
The Finger Lakes wine and tourism industry opposes the incinerator which Circular enerG wants to build at the former Seneca Army Depot. Circular is using the Article 10 application process which allows it to override local zoning and town boards. The towns around Romulus are all opposed to the project.
State lawmakers from the region have introduced bills suspending Article 10 for the project.
