Rescue crews worked into Thursday night before suspending their search for a 63-year-old man who vanished while taking a swim off a boat in Lake Ontario.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says the man was with two others on a 40-foot boat, about two-and-a-half miles out from the mouth of Irondequoit Bay when he jumped in. He began struggling and the others threw him a life ring, but he went under before he could grab hold of it and didn’t come back up.
Searchers reached the scene at about 5:30 p.m. and used boats, a helicopter and airplanes in their search for the missing man, who has not yet been identified.
