The Monroe County Legislature Tuesday night passed what’s come to be called “Bryce’s Law” by unanimous vote. It provides that commercial grease traps must be secured and inspected annually, after three-year-old Bryce Raynor died in a restaurant parking lot after falling through the plastic lid of a restaurant grease trap.

County health officials inspected nearly 2,500 grease traps last month and found four that could allow a similar accident to take place. There are no state regulations for grease traps, so the Monroe County law is a first for New York. Local members of the State Assembly have proposed the law for statewide adoption.

County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo is expected to sign the new law, which would take effect at the end of the month.
