A measure to rename two city parks that bear the names of former slave holders passed the Rochester City Council Tuesday night.
Nathaniel Square and Charles Carroll Park downtown are both named after slave holders, Nathaniel Rochester and Charles Carroll. City Council asked the city historian to compile a list of parks and facilities bearing such names.
The measure passed 8-1, with only Councilman Jose Peo opposed.
Possible new names suggested for the parks include Austin Steward, a Black entrepeneur who founded a meat market on Main Street in the 19th Century. Another is James McCuller, the late head of Action for a Better Community.
