A disturbance at a family festival day led to a guard being assault at the Groveland correctional Facility in Livingston County yesterday.

The State Correctional Officers Police Benevolent Association says a sergeant noticed an inmate apparently was handed something by a visitor before heading into a bathroom. When the officer followed inmate Lance Williams into the bathroom, he saw Williams try to hide four balloons… then throw them into a toilet.

Suspecting they were filled with drugs, the officer tried to recover the balloons from the toilet but was tackled by the inmate. Other officers answered his call for help and restrained Williams, but the suspected drugs were flushed.

The association says the sergeant suffered knee, shoulder and groin injuries.
