A copyright infringement lawsuit brought against the Rochester Institute of Technology has been thrown out by a federal judge.
The suit was brought by the estate of film critic Stanley Kauffmann against RIT’s publishing operation, which published a collection of Kauffman’s writings last year. The RIT Press volume was “The Millennial Critic: Stanley Kauffmann on Film,” edited by Robert Cardullo, a professor of criticism. The estate sued, claiming Cardullo didn’t have permission from the Kauffmann estate to sell his past works.
U.S. District Court Judge Charles Siragusa ruled that “New Republic” magazine, and not the Kauffmann estate, owned Kauffman’s articles for that publication. Those were the articles used in the book, so Judge Siragusa summarily dismissed the case.
