The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office says convicted murderer James Moore has been granted parole. Moore is New York’s longest-serving prison inmate, imprisoned since 1963 for the murder and rape of 14-year-old Pamela Moss.
Moore pleaded guilty to the 1962 murder to avoid the death penalty, accepting life in prison instead. He’s now 88 years old.
During his incarceration New York’s laws changed, and Moore became eligible for parole. But a board denied his application more than 20 times before granting parole on this occasion.
DA Sandra Doorley vehemently oposed Moore’s release, as did her predecessors down the years. She says she’s deeply saddened by the news.
