A Rochester grocery store owner has been sentenced to spend 16 weekends on jail work programs after being found guilty of illegally exchanging food stamps for cash.

The New York State Inspector General says Nabil Saeed of Discount Food Market on Avenue D pleaded guilty to misuse of food stamps. The state says he bought up benefits from poor customers for pennies on the dollar.  His arrest was part of an investigation into three convenience stores suspected of misusing more than $35,000 worth of food aid.

In addition to weekends in jail, Saeed also forfeited $50,000 authorities seized at his store.
