More than 60 people, many of them parents and students, lined up Tuesday night to protest against teacher staff cuts in the Rochester City School District.
The 152 layoffs, plus more reassignments, are necessary according to School Superintendent Terry Dade to close the potential $65 million budget gap left by his predecessor. Opponents to the cuts packed into the school district headquarters during a school board finance committee meeting, forcing authorities to move to a bigger room.
Meanwhile, students continued to walk out of class and demonstrate Tuesday against the cuts, and Assemblyman Harry Bronson urged Dade to go slow on layoffs as he tries to get more financial aid from the state.
Meanwhile, Assemblyman David Gantt, the senior state legislator from Rochester, said more aid is not the way to go.
