With 22 people killed in Rochester since January 1st, Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren says a new Office of Neighborhood Safety will coordinate through all city agencies in an effort to reduce the level of violence.
In a news conference, officials said they’re taking a page from a book written by Newark, New Jersey, which coordinated public safety data, mentoring, agencies that serve youth and others to meet agreed-on outcomes.
Department of Recreation and Community Services Chair Daniele Lyman-Torres said the plan will be community designed, and will include ways of interrupting violent conduct, mentoring, job opportunities and investments in agencies that deal with family and related crises.
This came a day after a group of police chiefs and senior law enforcement officials condemned the surge in street violence this year, saying it was moving into the suburbs.
