Federal legislation proposed by Western New York Congressman Chris Collins would roll back parts of New York’s NY SAFE gun control law, by limiting state authority to regulate rifles and shotguns.

The controversial New York law declared some types of semi-automatic rifles to be assault weapons. People who already owned one could keep it, but they can no longer be bought or sold in New York State. The SAFE act also bans ownership or sale of magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, and require them to be loaded with no more than seven rounds.

The Collins bill would undo all of those regulations and ban states from implementing restrictions tougher than those in federal law. Collins says it would restore second amendment rights he says were unjustly taken away by Governor Andrew Cuomo. Collins has support of sporting and shooting groups.
