The Coast Guard is warning Great Lakes area residents that the waters are cold for this time of year, even dangerously so.

Sunday’s water temperature reading off Rochester was 46 degrees. The Coast Guard is warning boaters and beach-goers that temperatures below 77 degrees are considered dangerous and can quickly cause hypothermia.

At the current temperatures, falling off a boat offshore could quickly lead to drowning. The Coast Guard advises dressing for the water temperature, not the air temperature, as well as wearing a life vest.
