The Rochester City School District’s Chief Financial Officer has quit.
Everton Sewell handed in his resignation Tuesday evening following the district budget shortfall, now pegged at $30.1 million dollars in figures released at a school board meeting Tuesday evening by Superintendent Terry Dade.
Sewell was largely absent from the district during recent weeks.
Both the State Budget Director and now the Interim Commissioner of the New York State Education Department have released letters of concern over the Rochester City School District’s financial situation. Both are urging rapid action to figure out how the district overspent its budget by $30 million and to immediately take action to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
The State Comptroller is currently auditing the district finances.
Interim Director Elizabeth Berlin wants a full assessment from School Board President Van White and a detailed analysis of the corrections being taken.
Budget Director Robert Mujica outlines a series of steps he says the State Education Department should take immediately, including an investigation of what went wrong and if necessary, removing the School Board from office.
