A federal court judge has approved a consent decree that settles a class-action lawsuit against the Rochester City School District.

The suit was brought against the RCSD by parents of students with disabilities, accusing the district of routinely operating its special education program outside of state and federal standards. The settlement was worked out between the two sides over about 18 months, and is now in effect with the judge’s approval.

The agreement sets standards to be met by the RCSD and student performance goals that are to be met to make sure the district provides timely and compliant services for students with disabilities and to improve their graduation rates.
